Second Annual Clover School District Battle of the Books
CLOVER, S.C. – Throughout the year, fourth and fifth grade students from all seven of the Clover School District elementary schools prepared for the district’s annual Battle of the Books Challenge which culminated on Friday, March 17 at Crowders Creek Elementary School with the Bethel Smarties wearing the crown for the district.
This year’s contest featured 84 students, grouped into 21 teams of four. In preparation for the event, each school hosted its own contest, with the top three teams from each school qualifying for the district-wide event.
Students demonstrated their knowledge of the books they read through a pair of games in head-to-head competition with other teams. Questions based on the plot and characters of each novel were asked and students were required to name the title of the book and the author to gain maximum points.
QUOTE:
Anne Witte, Instructional Supervisor for English and Language Arts
“Battle of the Books is a highly engaging literary competition that bridges the skills our students are learning in their ELA classrooms with a list of award winning fiction. It fits a love of reading in a game-like atmosphere and teaches our students that reading can be a team sport. Students in grades 4 and 5 from every elementary school in the district get to come together to battle it out for the honor of being named the top readers in Clover!”
