Scrambled Legs
About: Scrambled Legs, Bethel’s long distance running club, is born from the desire to get girls & boys (Grades 2-5) physically active and interested in health & wellness via long distance running with the goal to run a 5K at the end of our season.
Training: Scrambled Legs will use the Road Runner’s Club of America (RRCA) “Kids Run the Nation” youth running program as the basis for training—see RRCA’s website for program details while incorporating core & upper body strength training into our practices. Children will receive instruction appropriate to their level. The emphasis will be on good technique while making running fun. Each session will begin with a short overview of the day’s topic followed by actual training, which will be overseen by Bethel’s P.E. Teacher, Kay Wessinger, with breakouts into smaller groups led by adult volunteers. Children will track their progress via a training log.
Gear: In order to participate in Scrambled Legs sessions your child needs:To wear clothing suited for running & exercise including socks and running/athletic shoes. (Your child should be dressed appropriately when they come to the track as there will be no time to change clothes.)
A bottle of water to quench their thirst and stay hydrated.
A healthy post-session snack, in case they’re hungry.
To bring a positive attitude and the willingness to try.
Participation Cap: In order to maintain low children-to-adult volunteer ratios, we must currently cap participation at 40 children. Therefore, the first 40 children to register will be accepted with later registrants being placed on a wait-list, unless we gain more adult volunteers.Volunteers: Adult volunteers (from the casual runner to the marathoner) are needed to work with small groups of children. If you are interested in helping with the club, please contact the coordinators, Sarah Work or Kay Wessinger (Bethel PE Teacher) at clapp.work@gmail.com
Parents/Guardians: Parents and guardians provide the best role modeling for their child(ren)! As such, we would love to have you come out to walk, jog or run with your child(ren). If you have the notion and availability, please join us!

of
Youth RunningChildren have the natural urge to move and play, regardless of athletic ability. Encouraging an active lifestyle, along with a healthy diet, is important to developing overall healthy habits that will benefit children throughout their lives.
Running, specifically long distance running, is a great option for all children. The naturally athletic child will love running because it is athleticism in its purest form. The athletically challenged child will love running because it is the most basic of athletic pursuits as it requires them only to put one foot in front of the other and do so at their own pace. Every child can achieve success with running.
Success on the track can translate to success in the classroom as well as socially and emotionally as when children experience progress and success in their training, they build confidence, which promotes positive personal growth.
Although running is an individual pursuit, Scrambled Legs will promote friendship, cooperation, and team unity.
