These are some things students might be
involved in during the school year:
Accelerated Reader : Students read books, take tests, and earn points for prizes or special activities.
Book It! : Book It! Is a reading incentive program sponsored by Pizza Hut. It motivates children to read by rewarding them for their reading accomplishments with a coupon for a free individual pizza. If they reach their goal all six months of the program, they receive a medal.
SC Book Awards : Each year the South Carolina Association of School Librarians sponsors awards for the best books published the previous year. We participate in the Children’s Book Award program. The SCASL chooses 20 titles as nominees and students may read these books and vote on their favorites. An award is presented to the author of the winning book the following year at the state library conference.
Book Fair : Each year at Bethany we have at least one book fair. There are contests for students to win free books and drawings for teachers to win books for their classrooms. Proceeds from the sale of books at the book fair are used to supplement classroom libraries and the Media Center collection.
Book Week Activities: Various activities to promote reading take place during Children’s Book Week. These might include: guest readers, read-a-thon, Drop Everything And Read, book themed displays, peer reading, visits by book characters, book related lunch menu, and Family Reading Night with door prizes.
Read Across America: Sponsored by National Education Association, Read Across America is a celebration held annually on March 2--Dr. Seuss’s birthday—to shine a spotlight on the joys as well as the necessity of literacy and reading. In cities and towns across the nation, millions of Americans read. At Bethany we emphasize the importance of reading by reading Dr. Seuss books to ourselves and others, having guest readers come to read, and participating in other activities pertaining to reading and Dr. Seuss.
Meet the Author: Authors are spotlighted in the Media Center periodically throughout the year. Books by the author are displayed along with a picture of the author and biographical information. Books by the author are read at story time and students are encouraged to check out the author’s books. When students are familiar with the author and his/her works they are given an opportunity to write letters, draw pictures, and make cards to send to the author. We wait anxiously for a reply!
